Visiting Copenhagen

June 8, 2017

Denmark is famous for its pastries and open sandwiches.

If you come to Copenhagen, it is mandatory to test "smørrebrød" with beer and "snaps". Snaps are a word for a small shot of a strong alcoholic drink, taken during a meal.

In Denmark, a snaps will always be akvavit, although there are many variants of it. Sandwiches usually consist of dense dark brown bread with butter. Topping is homemade meatloaf, pieces of meat or fish or cheese.

This daily exercise is the basis of the famous Danish sandwich: a piece or two with bread and toppings  and then decorated with accompanying jams, herbs and fermented veggies to create a tasty and visually appealing sandwich.

Believe it or not - it's very tasteful.

My favorite place for "smørrebrød" in Copenhagen is Cafè Sorgenfri,

Located in Rolæggerstræde 8, in Copenhagen.

This old, rusty and slightly tired restaurant has served sandwiches for hundreds of years and still going strong.
