Guide to safari in South Africa
Do you dream about going on a safari?
This is how traveling on a safari with a movie screw looks like. Here you can get inspired to put together your own dream vacation to Africa.
A safari trip to Africa is an experience for life. The beautiful national parks, wildlife reserves, the impressive savannahs and the meeting with African wildlife combine the most amazing experiences. Africa is a treasure chamber of adventurous impressions. The magnificent nature, the African drums, the dance and the sounds in the dark affect all the senses.
I care about animals and animal welfare, so it was important for me to choose an eco lodge. This means that the site takes responsibility for animal welfare in the immediate area, introduces free movement and does not engage in farming or hunting. I always try to think about sustainability when I travel. We manage the earth for generations after us, and should try to make choices that bring back to life on earth.
Safari has always been my big dream, and dreams are to be fulfilled. In October, I traveled to the Kruger Park in South Africa. There was a week of game drive, sundowner and gin & tonic in the shadows under the trees.A little Karen Blixen all over. Besides, we also had a film crew to make a commercial movie for DNB spare. There were little sun dresses and hat, but lots of open safaris with wild animals. It's also a nice experience to sit together every evening and talk about what we've experienced. Sink into a chair with an ice-cold gin & tonic, but the experienced guides tell robbery stories over the open flame of the firecamp.
Day 1 and 2:
We traveled from Oslo with Qatar Airways to Doha. So on to Johannesburg.
Qatar Airways flies to over 120 different destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe, East, Middle East, North and South America and Oceania.
I travel often and choose Qatar whenever possible. First, the seats are comfortable, the food is good, and the staff know what it means to get personalized service on long trips. If you ask me, it's worth paying a little extra for comfort. The journey already starts when you lock the door at home.
Have you never travelled through Doha Airport, then you've missed something. It is one of the most beautiful airports in the world. There are marble, glasses and comfortable sofas throughout. If the waiting time is long between your planes, it is possible to stay in a hotel for a few hours, go to the spa or take the shuttle bus into the city centre for sightseeing. I of course used the opportunity on my way home for a massage at the spa. Then I got full access to all spa facilities. Remember to bring the bathing suit in the handbag next time.
Our lodge was in a private park with open fences against the Kruger National Park. With 10,000 hectares of wilderness. Here there are wild animals everywhere, and often they dump into the lodge itself. You do not have to worry about your own safety if you relate to the instructions given. We had wild boar in the garden, monkeys on the terrace and elephants who came down to the Ollifant river to drink
Days 3, 4 and 5
We got waken up at 3.30pm for early game drives and it was worth getting up early. In a beautiful Africa landscape, we stopped to watch the sunrise. Starting the day with hot coffee on the "Lion Hill" in what the sun rises is an experience you will not want to miss. We saw elephants, giraffes, lions, zebra, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard. The lions we had to "search" for, but after many hours of patience we became prized with a lion class of five. Five brothers that layed curled together and slept. For me, this was worth the whole trip to South Africa.
Impala is the most common animal in the Kruger Park, and from their point of view they are called "fast food for lions". On the butt of the impala there is one M in the fur - like Mc Donalds, therefore, "fast food".
We were also lucky enough to see a leopard, according to our guide, this did not happen in 14 years. So, you can understand that it became a great experience for everyone.
We were lucky to have "the elephant doctor" as our private guide. He was born and raised in the Kruger Park, and has taken college education on wild animals. He has worked as a guide for 20 years and is a living Wikipedia. He lives and breathes for the wild animals and their welfare. For us it was incredibly exciting to be on adventure with him.
Take a look at the movie we created for DNB spare so you'll also experience what we experienced.
We travelled the Drakenberg mountain for a day outing. We took a helicopter trip beyond the countryside and for a view. We also visited one of South Africa's biggest waterfalls. Here we also recorded parts of the commercial movie for DNB spare.
Music video for Taylor Swift's "Wildest Dreams" was also recorded here.
Tips for planning your trip:
It costs between 25,000 - 50,000 kroner to travel on safari, depending on the content of the activities and the standard of the hotel. There are many choices from Norway, and my recommendation is to google it up to find a trip that suits you perfectly.
You will need 4-5 days of game drive, bush-walk and other savanna related activities. More days than that will probably make most of us a little restless. Fortunately, most lodges have activities like helicopter tours, ballooning or visiting a nearby village.
How to dress up for a safari?
It is winter in The Kruger Park when we have summer and summer when we have winter. But keep in mind that no matter what season you travel so pack with some warm clothes. I travelled in October wearing a hat, thin jacket and wool - and used it all. One day the temperature was 30 degrees, and the day after, it descended to 12 degrees.
Bring clothes with neutral colours like white, beige and grey. Certain clothes that breathe and which resist you sweat. Shorts and dresses can also be used. Make sure your clothes are not cramped and too short - you're going in and out of the safari cars, and they're tall and a little hard to climb in and out of.
For the evenings, dress and high heels fits well with a jacket you can take over.
